Grade Calculator
This free, easy grade calculator is a fast grading calculator for a test or quiz. No sign-up, no account, nothing leaves your browser. Enter total questions and wrong answers to see your live result.
Step 1 — How many questions, how many wrong?
Tip: press W for +1 Wrong and R to reset (when you are not typing in a box).
17 / 20 = 85% (B)
17 correct, 3 wrong.
Change the grade scale (optional)
Your school may use different cut-offs. Change them here and the letter updates everywhere on this page. Defaults are the common US scale.
Step 2 — See the full grading chart
Click any row to set “Wrong” to that value. The highlighted row is your current result.
| Wrong | Correct | Grade % | Letter |

How this grade calculator works
- Enter the total number of questions.
- Enter how many were wrong (or tap +1 Wrong as you mark).
- Read the percentage and letter — and the chart for every other wrong-count.
Worked example: 20 questions, 3 wrong = 17 correct = 85% (B on the default scale). One more wrong (4 wrong) drops it to 80% (B, only just). That is why the chart matters: it shows the cost of the next mistake at a glance.
How to read the grading chart
The chart rebuilds for any total you enter. For a short quiz, the steps are larger: on 10 questions, 1 wrong is 90% and 2 wrong is 80%. On a longer test, each mistake costs less: on 50 questions, 1 wrong is 98% and 5 wrong is 90%. The letter in each row uses the scale set above, so if your school uses different cut-offs, change them first and then read the chart.
Frequently asked questions
Is this the same as a weighted grade calculator? No. This page is for a single test or quiz where every question counts equally. For a course with homework, quizzes and exams at different weights, use the Average Grade Calculator, which weights each category by the percentage you enter.
What if my school’s scale is different? Open “Change the grade scale” above and set your school’s A / B / C / D cut-offs. The letter updates everywhere on this page, including the chart.
Do I need an account? No. There is no sign-up and nothing is sent to a server. Your numbers stay in your browser while you use the page.
For a course average, try the Average Grade Calculator. To work out what you need on an exam, use the Final Grade Calculator. See also our Privacy Policy.
Tips for marking quickly
If you are marking a set of papers, set the total once and then tap +1 Wrong for each incorrect answer as you go, rather than retyping the wrong count for every paper. Press W on your keyboard for the same step when you are not typing in a box. When you finish a paper, read the percentage and letter, then press Reset before the next paper so you start again from 20 questions and 3 wrong only if that is your usual total; otherwise change the total first. If a test has a different number of questions, change the total before you start marking, because the chart and the percentage both depend on that total. Checking the chart before you record a grade can also help you spot a borderline result, such as a paper that is one mistake away from the next letter grade.
Test grade steps — infographic
Four steps: total questions, wrong answers, correct answers, then the percent. The worked example in the graphic is 20 questions, 3 wrong, giving 17/20 = 85% (B).
