Final Grade Calculator

With a current grade of 84%, a final worth 30%, and a target of 85%, you need 87.3% on the final. This free final grade calculator gives that answer live, with no sign-up and nothing sent to a server.

Step 1 — Your numbers

You need 87.3% on the final for 85%.

Formula: (85 − 84 × 0.70) ÷ 0.30 = 87.3%

Needed for common targets: For 90%: 104.0% • For 80%: 70.7% • For 70%: 37.3% • For 60%: 4.0%

Step 2 — What if I score a given grade on the final?

If you score 90% on the final, your course grade becomes 85.8%.

Target 85% is reached at this final score.

What if I already took the final?

How this final grade calculator works

Needed on final = (target − current × (1 − final weight)) ÷ final weight. That is the direct answer, and the rest of this section explains why it works.

Worked example: current 84%, final worth 30%, target 85% gives (85 − 84 × 0.70) ÷ 0.30 = (85 − 58.8) ÷ 0.30 = 87.3%. If you score 90% instead, your course grade becomes 84 × 0.70 + 90 × 0.30 = 58.8 + 27 = 85.8%.

Definitions: current grade is your grade before the final; final weight is the share of the course the final is worth; target is the course grade you want. Edge cases: a needed score above 100% means the target is out of reach on the final alone; a needed score at or below 0% means you have already secured the target. A common mistake is using the weight already completed instead of the final weight.

Final counts as one test

If the final counts as one test, equal to your other tests, its weight is 1 divided by the total number of tests. For example, with a current average of 84% from 4 other tests and a final score of 90%, the overall grade is (84 × 4 + 90) ÷ 5 = 426 ÷ 5 = 85.2%.

Frequently asked questions

What if my final is worth a different weight? Change “Final exam weight” — that is the single number that changes the answer most. A larger final weight makes the needed score closer to the gap between your current grade and your target.

Can I use letter grades? Convert your current and target letters to % first using your school’s scale (for example, B is about 83–86%), then enter the %. The % answer is exact; the letter is a guide.

What if I already took the final? Use the “Already took the final” option above — it gives your overall grade, not a needed score. Enter the final score you received and read the overall result.

Need a full course average first? Use the Average Grade Calculator, then bring that average here as your current grade. For a single test, use the Grade Calculator. See also our Privacy Policy.
